FDA Clears Covid Treatment for the Immunocompromised

Every alert that I have received from the FDA IBD patients have not been listed, it's talked about cancer, HIV & transplant patients. Evushield will be given to patients that do not have any antibodies after receiving the shots or allergic to a component in them.

Limited amounts for each state will be given at first, we are going to have to wait & see how this plays out.

Have friend with Crohns that was just diagnosed with Covid. While well she could not find Evusheld either.

Now she can't find Paxlovid pills for after you catch it.... She said they were on the phones all day yesterday. No monoclonal antibody stations were able to help her either. They are out. I'll let you know if she finds any Paxlovid.

BTW--she is fully vaccinated, has 3rd shot, and had a low antibody response to Pfizer. She's a retired person that says she only goes out to get gas, see doctor's/have infusions. Her groceries are delivered. She said the only time she was exposed was when getting gas or her infusion a week ago but she had on mask? It is omicron. (My eyebrows are at my hairline--is it really that contagious??)

Out of curiosity - did you or your friend have any reactions to the vaccines? Like flu-like symptoms, groggy, brain fog, etc...

Clo, does your friend live alone so she had zero contact with anyone other than at her infusion or getting gas and did she wear a mask at both places? One other question -- what kind of mask was she wearing -- cloth, surgical or N95/KN95? If she doesn't live alone it's entirely possible an asymptomatic person who lives with her unknowingly gave her the virus. If she wore a good mask in both places and lives alone I am kinda freaked out wondering how she got it.

I didn't have any reaction to Pfizer. I am unsure on the Moderna. I had or was in a mini flare and I was having issues because we had been adjusting the timing on my Remicade and I hadn't been taking Methotrexate. If I had any type of a reaction it was very slight.

My friend has been taken to the hospital. She did not have a reaction to any of them. We spoke of that and wondered. We thought they gave us saline. She had all Pfizer's.

I'll let you know how she does.

I'm very sorry about your friend. It's a mess out there. It makes me so mad that antivaxxers are running around without a care in the world and putting other people's lives at risk.

Thank you for answering my question - I suspected that you didn't have any reaction to the vaccines. I was sick for days after each dose and that's why I haven't really bothered to have my antibodies tested.

Straydog -- One of my nieces and a co-worker both had what they thought were allergies or a bad cold for about 2 weeks before they got the typical covid symptoms (fatigue & loss of smell) My niece was tested several times and was negative at first until the loss of smell and then was postive. Co-worker didn't get tested until the loss of smell and fatigue kicked in. My niece recovered pretty quickly (she was vaccinated). Co-worker (un-vaccinated) got pretty sick and was not able to work for over 2 weeks. She works in the office so may have exposed others. (I work from home).

A friend of mine (triple vaccinated) recently had what she described as the worst cold she ever had. When I asked her if she was tested to be sure it wasn't Covid she said that she was sure it was just a cold. I tried to press her about how she knew unless she was tested and she snapped at me that she "knew". I suspect she had Covid and doesn't want to acknowledge that possibility because she continued to work and eat at restaurants etc so she could have exposed many people.

I stay away from everyone unless I absolutely have to

CC, keep your mask on tomorrow. The people you are talking about either had Covid or Delta especially with the loss of taste & smell. The newer version, Omicron, they say the symptoms are much milder & they don't last as long. The ones on my app felt off for a short time, not a full week, a couple got tested & were negative. I live in Texas, mountain cedar is extremely high right now & if a person has allergies they will suffer. I use Flonase nearly year round.

I don't think we will get rid of Covid any time soon, between break through cases & the shots only work for so long. My concern is an immunity to the shots in time. Since Omicron is not as severe as Covid & Delta, I hope as it mutates more the severity will continue to lessen. They are saying now even though the cases of Covid are soaring, hospitalizations & deaths are down which is a good sign. My state so far is doing ok.

All we can do is be as safe as possible.

Thanks for your responses. I have been totally wigging out today.

CC--mask on and no snack. I am not taking the snack. No mask removal for me.

I live in Texas. My friend lives with her husband. He had major heart surgery and is having a hard time recovering--so he does not leave the house. (Hasn't for the last 3 months..he can barely walk.) She has groceries delivered to her front porch. She has no contact with the delivery person. She wears this coverall thing and gloves and wipes off her groceries outside. She then takes them to her staging area, wipes them down yet again, and they are placed in the chest freezer or holding shelves to wait for 1 week. Veges are thoroughly washed and dried in the staging room. Then put in the fridge. She then takes the clothes off, tosses mask and gloves, showers and washes the clothes. When she comes back from shower she sprays everything with Lysol. She does not deviate. No one in or out of her house. She is terrified of Covid. Medical visits are virtual unless it's an infusion or blood work is needed. They use N95 masks, KN95 and surgical masks. They are masks the government approved. The day of her infusion she was late, stopped at a gas station, no one else was there. She just used a surgical mask cause no one was there... But as she was getting in her car someone pulled in. She said less than a few seconds and on the other side of the pump. They did cough or sneeze...but she had on a mask. She went for her infusion, she did take her N95 off for a snack and the soda. She wore her mask the rest of the time. She drove home. No stops. Her kids did not come home for Christmas--they didn't want parents to get sick. She used to be in the medical field. She was a nurse and then ran a nursing department for a major hospital. So she knows about this stuff...

She said that she notified the infusion place and let them know. They told her that no one had been ill there. They test on Mondays and no one was positive. So they don't test again unless they are symptomatic??? I asked her to get that clarified. I thought they tested daily???? She's thinking it was either during snacks or gas. But none of the other patients there with her have indicated they were sick. She personally called them too. Sometimes when you are getting infusions you get to know the people in the room with you. (My place has separate rooms with doors Thank God.)No snacks for me next week!

These antivaxxers and people getting sick and not giving us a warning...it's scarey. I don't even want to go in for my infusions next week because of our surge. Now I think...if she could get this then I could too. She is a HUGE germaphob.

darn that’s so spooky clo! Thanks for telling us the details about your friend. I have been getting a little lackadaisical about catching covid as I did have a good immune response to my vaccine and booster, but your story has scared me. I would bet it was the cough/sneeze at the gas station and boy does that show how contagious this stuff is if it got through her mask from that far away. I hope she is okay!

poopydoop -- glad your friend is ok, but it's crazy that people think it's just a really horrible cold when we are in the middle of a pandemic.

I know and she has a PhD in statistics 🙈 just goes to show being educated is no substitute for common sense. I'm of the opinion that most community spreading is through people who think that they "only" have a cold.

I'm also rather alarmed by the tale of Clo's friend. Sorry to hear 😥 and hope she pulls through.

Just arrived in Florida for the winter. I spoke with someone in the infectious disease department at the local hospital. (I was looking for monoclonal antibodies, just in case). They have the antibodies. When I asked her if they have Evusheld, she’d never heard of it. She asked a coworker. He’d never heard of it. My take…

I’m guessing that they won’t know much about it until it arrives at their hospital. They have a lot going on right now.

I spoke to my friend this am. She's doing great. She said her infectious disease doctor said that usually people get this when they are exposed and have their masks off for a longer period of time. So now they are wondering if someone (a patient or nurse) came into the infusion room asymptomatic and she caught it there cause that's where she has her snack... and the infusion room had multiple people in it. She was Surrounded by a curtain but with her mask off. (I'm gonna say this-dont want to be mean but... She chews a darn potato chip like 50 times and she eats them one at a time. It takes her forever to eat chips! Forever.... I wonder how long she really had her mask on during the infusion since she was eating chips.) Her ID said that his patients taking Remicade that have caught covid are doing amazingly well... I don't know if he was trying to put her mind at ease or if Remicade helps people with Covid. (I couldn't find any trial results from when they were checking to see if Remicade helped with Covid. There was a study in England I believe) She is getting supplemental oxygen and the feeling of it rushing up her nose freaks her out... She still about passes out when she stands up or walks to the bathroom. She said besides that she feels like it's a pesky cold. She can still smell and everything still tastes like metal. Hmmm.

I do know that my Infusion place does not test patients for Covid prior to getting their infusions. I am going to be vigilant from now on. I was sorta easing up on it. Gas without a mask, getting take out food, allowing maskless guys put the groceries in the back of the SUV... Going forward I am requesting masked people. (Can you even do that in Texas? Lol... Love Texas but don't like the no mask no vaccine policies)

Keith, thanks for posting that. Maybe this week our doctor's will have more info.
