Anyone experience extreme Depression after PFO closure?

Hi,
I have a pfo and asd and would like to know if anyone experienced extreme depression after closure? My good friend had hers closed and suddenly experienced extreme depression to the point she was hospitalized, one of the clinicians told her it sometimes happens with any kind of heart surgery but they have no idea what causes it. It’s not depression from having a defect, it’s depression from having messed around with the heart. I googled it and it’s actually a real phenomenon, now I am terrified. Anyone out there experience this or are most experiences good?

I must add that Her migraines did not lessen either so maybe she didn’t get the hole covered fully or something strange..???

Nikorah, I would not go as far as saying everyone that has heart surgery has "extreme depression" or even depression at all. It is very much an individual thing. I have had friends, including my brother that had heart surgery & some did experience some depression after surgery. Not all of them required being put on a low dose antidepressant either. In my brother's situation & a close friend, these were highly energetic people that went 500 miles an hour every day of their life & young. Suddenly, they have surgery & they had no idea about the recovery time, it made a big impact on them. This made perfectly good sense as to why they got depressed. They did not need to be on medication long & did great.

My advice don't anticipate something that may not happen to you, too unhealthy & not productive at all. I very much mean this in a kind way too. Take care.

Thanks Susie, I was hoping to hear from several people who had experienced it themselves just to get an idea of the consensus. My friend had extreme depression to the point she checked herself in to a mental hospital after her pfo closure. I am not healthy like your brother so I have a lot more questions about the reality of my possible outcome, if that makes sense. Anyway, thanks for the answer!
