New Diagnose moderate to severe mitral regurgitation

IM new here I spent most of the last year in the Prostate Cancer group getting plenty of help and support there and just as I started to fell better and some of the treatment side effects stated to subside this is dropped on me. Anyway looking for support and help. Im pretty sure im going to need some work done but would; appreciate any advice here.

1st off im 64 average shape, My symptoms have been sever shortness of breath leg swelling and such cant walk to far with out running out of breth, I was told it was Emphysema and give inhalers , had all the cardio test and last week went in for an echo and was told this , there were going to do a TEE but are doing another echo this coming Monday.


Has anyone had this how di you deal with it did you do surgery and if so how did you make out how long was recovery from the surgery .

Hi tee. takes pics. Via esphogus. Heart chambers arteries. It is a more extensive than echo. Mild to moderate regurgitation is common...and a function of the ticker.

The legs swelling...hmm. was thinking pad. But is cold...cramping...etc

Ticker....artery blockage,?
Maybe require angiogram.

See after echo ..then discuss. Keep strong. HT.

Hi HT , well had my 2nd echo today and Dr said I had severe mitral regurgitation and will need to have it repaired. so it will most likely be done in NY at NYU ..I wont mention the Dr as I haven't met him yet to discuss it but I assume it will be done in the next few months . My ideal time would be March but I assume it will not be totally up to me . so now, I would like to know anyone who has had this mitral valve repair to give me some real life insights to the procedure and the recovery time and effects.

Thank you I notice there is not much participation here as there was in the prostate forum si all help is appreciated.

Hi John, sorry to read what you are dealing with now. I am guessing your pending appt is with the surgeon. Both my brother & father had their aortic valves replaced, not the mitral. Everyone responds differently during the healing process. my brother was 52 & did very well & my father was 74 & he did well also. The first two weeks were the most difficult, both had to sleep sitting up. It was too painful to sleep flat in a bed. If you have an electric bed then you should be fine. Neither could sleep in a recliner where you had to pull the handle, if you have an electric recliner that would work better. Home health came & did exercises a couple of times a week. Cardiac rehab several weeks after surgery was a tremendous help to both. In fact, my brother continued going after being released, it was an option offered to him for minimal cost a month.

Everything will depend on the particular surgical options the surgeon recommends. Since my dad & brother had their work done, a lot of new techniques are available that are not as invasive as open heart surgery.

Yes, this forum is really slow. Some of try to help out as much as we can. Please let us know how the appt goes with the surgeon. Take care.

Hi John. I'm about 4 months out from open heart surgery and I'm feeling great. It was my mitral valve and it was my second surgery. The first surgery failed and after nearly 2 years I went for the second.

I did a detailed update about my experience in a separate post, if you'd like more info.

Hope ya doing ok now Bob. Yeah share info. Me...double by pass. I think the worst part is ...the huffing.... hospital term for coughing up the crap. The small folded towel to chest walking the corridor.

I too did cardiac rehab. It is a must...it is excellent. Also john a good work up will be done. Perioprative. Pre op. HT.

Hey Bob & HT would love some info i been away a few months dealing with Pre Op stud so would love to h ear about yoru experiences.

John, you will be okay. You will be having a walk after wake up around wake up area. They brutal with this but it is a must. No fear... heart surgeons have paid their dues! Just experience your experience. Sometimes, for some less is more. HT.
