Coconut milk - apparently like Sucralfate/Carafate !

I just came across this study - it's on rats not humans, but still interesting! The rats were given a drug which caused them to develop ulcers and coconut milk was found to be protective against the development of ulcers. Coconut milk was apparently better than coconut water and its properties are likened to the efficacy of Sucralfate (or Carafate).

Just wondering if anyone has tried it?

Noone will prescribe me Sucralfate so maybe I'll go and find some coconut milk!!

Well if it causes indigestion, pain, reflux, burping or nausea, I have to say I'm unlikely to notice seeing as I have all that most days anyway!

If you mean lower GI upset, then I'll watch out for it!

Not tried anything new yet. I've increased my ppi and feel worse, reflux definitely worse and more pain on the higher dose. Maybe just coincidence as nothing really works, drugs, food or anything else.

Hi, I've replied on the Barrett's thread too. I was diagnosed on gastroscopy this year as having mild oesophagitis and mild gastritis with the small area of Barretts. I was on Omeprazole at the time.

This "episode" started 12 months ago. I had earlier problems in 2007 which cleared up when I came off drugs and used DGL! That method hasn't worked this time!! In 2007 my scope was normal. I don't have Helicobacter they say, though in 2007 the tests was "borderline" which has left me unconvinced that I don't have it. I asked to have a trial of treatment for it, but they refused.

Off drugs I have lots of typical heartburn, waking nausea and some pain, and lots of burping. On ppis I have occasional nausea, more sensation of reflux and a constant hunger sensation. It's a rock and a hard place; the gastritis has made me anaemic and previously this corrected itself on ppis, so I have no choice but to take them. That does not stop, however, my constant quest to find an alternative solution.

My symptoms are fairly constant but I do get flare ups. Bizarrely, I feel best after the main meal of the day, and worst when hungry. The type of food seems to make little difference but a few things like coffee do aggravate. Despite being back on 30 mg Lansoprazole, I'm not feeling any improvement, as yet.

I agree...I don't understand why the UK docs say that Sucralfate is "from the dark ages" and won't prescribe it. It was prescribed by both my primary care doctor, and my GI doc here in the US. It's actually very expensive (the Carafate Suspension, at least), but not in the least looked upon as worthless. It is admittedly an old medication, but it still can work wonders, and is a very safe option.

Anyone come across these folk? Seems there are others out there who went "paleo" for their GERD. Coconut oil isn't good going off what they say. I may still try the milk though . . .

I take carafate and it works wonders for me. I take it only when I have a flare up because of the expense.

Ak Angel - I'd love to try Carafate, but it (or Sucralfate) doesn't seem to get prescribed here in the UK. I fear the drug reps have trained the GPs to treat all breakthrough symptoms with higher and higher doses of ppis !

There are many reports of people who have controlled or eliminated heartburn via low carb eating, and his Fast Tract diet takes it a step further. By placing a numeric value he calls fermentation potential on lots of foods, you can avoid the most troublesome ones. I know your family life precludes restrictive diets, but his system would enable you to just make some adjustments. I'm not strict on this diet at all, but I have something to turn to when I have a bad day.

Hi mmm where in uk can you buy iberogast? I am interested in trying it as I believe I am also suffering the same as you all the symptoms but no proof as tests come back negative. At the moment I am on antepsin otherwise called sucralfate here in uk. Thanks Rita
