Vomiting after fundoplication

2 and a half weeks until my fundoplication. I've read that most people cannot vomit after surgery. Is this true for most? And what happens if you have to vomit and you can't? Where does it go, does it hurt? Etc

According to my surgeon, vomiting will be close to impossible. However, he also said that if your body wants to get it out, it will, if it's something like a bad stomach bug. Some people claim they keep anti nausea medicine handy, but I haven't ever had the need to have it.

Ive been told I wont be able to and if I do I could bust the wrap. Other members on here say they have been able to vomit, it just hurts to do it, but the wrap has been unaffected.

General input seems to be, if you are going to vomit, best to do it after 1 year of recovery.

Most people cannot vomit after a nissen, well a full wrap anyway.

Ask for anti nausea meds and keep them with you. I keep them with me at all times just in case.

If your body needs to get rid of something it will whether it's vomiting or out the other end. I was told if I suspect food poisoning go to the ER, but for stomach bugs take the anti nausea meds and let your body deal with it the other way. I also keep Imodium on hand for those occasions to shut things down after everything has gone through.

I have dry heaved plenty of times with my nissens and have never torn my wrap. Wasn't fun, but made it through.

Hiya cherron,i had a stomach bug while on a trip to Poland and I could not vomit,i heaved and heaved but nothing came up.I could feel it that something was blocking the contents coming up.I just had sit it out for a couple of hours which was pretty rough to say the least. I wish I would have had some anti nausea medication with me. Lesson learned!
By the way I have a Partial Nissen Wrap. Barry

I think its quite different for everyone the best thing to do is just acknowledge that you will never be able to vomit again, if you do and it doesn't damage the wrap and reflux symptoms dont come back it's a bonus.

I got the stomach bug 2 1/2 months after the nissen. The surgeon never mentioned a word to me about anti nausea drugs. I only found out from this forum. I just had a bout with nausea today and I am 17 months out. I just put my anti nausea band around my wrist, tightened it, and the sensation was gone.

It is good you are asking. Be prepared before you get to the hospital.
