Still having Heartburn after Nissen Fundoplication (February 2019)

Hello Everyone,

I had Nissen 2 weeks ago. A few days after surgery I developed a sour taste that has not gone away. I have also been experiencing GERD symptoms in the middle of the night causing me to wake suddenly. I am still taking my Proton pump inhibitors plus Zantac with no relief. Has anyone else experienced these symptoms?

You may need endoscopy to see if the surgery was successful but give it 6 weeks post op.

I had my hernia repair and Nissen 3 1/2 weeks ago 18/2/19 and I am suffering a heartburn feeling that my surgeon says isn’t heartburn but very common in the early weeks so not to stress about it. I also had a cramping feeling in the night one night but I guess it’s all just healing slowly!
I have been on 40 mg PPI daily (1/2 of my pre surgery dose) and this week I’m moving to every second day for a few weeks then stopping completely.
Food wise I’m eating mashed pumpkin, sweet potato, potatoes, avocado eggs some salmon mashed ....not on to meats or stringy vegetables ( can’t wait to have salad again but could be a while!)
Can I suggest you read denchas post op posts which are the top post on this forum as they are very helpful.

Hello Folks,

Thank you for replying back. I did see my surgeon last week to go over my symptoms. He said it was a little unusual to be feeling these symptoms this early after surgery. However, he also mentioned that I need to be patient and let my body heal for a couple more weeks before he decides to do further testing. I have another appointment scheduled for February 20th. I will keep you posted!

Your early in your recovery. What you describe is not out of the scope of symptoms I've experienced and what I've heard others discuss. Inflammation peaks at different times for each person during the early weeks of recovery. It can cause tightness at the junction and cause some liquid or food to linger which might be the cause of the sour taste and discomfort. This is just a guess and not a diagnosis. I had a swollen sensation that persisted for at least the first month of recovery and sometimes a sour taste. Early recovery is a trial. Hang in there and know that full recovery will be longer than you think which can be discouraging. I'm now nearing two years post surgery and things are good. It was 14 months before I felt like I was feeling the full benefits of the surgery.

Hi there i am new to this forum. Wanted to ask some questions about the post nissen fundoplication recovery as I got operated on 26th of March with full wrap but from last 5 days whenever i used to woke up feel burning sensation in my left side chest and it is really a frustrating and depressing for me as i really don't know what to do please help me out .

Welcome to the Healing Well Forum! You are still very early into your recovery, and it's possible to experience all sorts of symptoms. Is this burning sensation in your throat/esophagus/stomach, or actually in the left side of your chest? If it actually is in the left side of your chest, it's best to contact your surgeon's office.

Thanks Sharon for replying. Actually that left side pain is from my esophagus as whenever i used to lie down pre operating symptoms came back i. e. Reflux and from last one month i was doing quite well as there is no reflux at all but suddenly feeling this symptoms again is quite frustrating. And yes i took my doctor's appointment on 20 th of this month but still want to know that is it common to get reflux back after 6 weeks from surgery?

Just about anything is possible. Some people benefit from still taking PPIs for a short period of time after surgery and then are weaned off of them. Have you tried taking something like Pepcid before bedtime to try and alleviate some of your symptoms? If you have gone back to a regular diet, you might want to try going back to soft/sloppy foods for a while as sometimes we try and advance our diets too quickly. I did not experience any reflux post-surgery, but everyone's recovery is different. I didn't start to feel better until around the 6-month mark, and then the "new" me around 1 year post-surgery.
