Trouble breathing / Asthma flare-up’s before fundoplication and now 5 weeks after... why?

Hi, My main reason for having surgery was severe silent GERD which caused the acid to come back into my esophagus and bronchial tubes and flare up my asthma, so I was constantly coughing and aspirating and I had asthma attacks just about 24 hours a day.

Fast forward to after surgery and it all went away. For the first few weeks I was eating very small amounts of soft foods and I didn’t have any problems. A week ago after my 3 week post-op the Doctor’s Assistant (doctor wasn’t available) 😡 said I could eat what I wanted so I started eating a few different foods. I mainly had soft foods, and kept the portions small. Some new foods caused pain so I stopped those, but even if I didn’t have pain I had just a few instances of needing my inhaler, which could have been normal allergies.

This week I am on vacation in Hawaii and eating more things, and probably too much, and I’m having LOTS of asthma problems. I am not sure if it’s the humidity here or if my surgery wasn’t successful and I have acid coming back up again causing asthma flare-up’s. Since I have silent GERD, and don’t taste the acid, I am not sure. I am so afraid that the wrap loosened and acid is coming back up.

Did anyone else have asthma problems before your surgery? Did they come back when you started eating more?

I will call the doctor when I get home next week if this continues, but just wondering if anyone else had something similar happen to them.

You are still very early in the healing process, so just about anything is possible. It's also very common to experience small setbacks during your recovery. You are doing the right thing by trying new foods, but backing off it they don't agree with your system. It's very unlikely that you wrap has loosened, but you'll need to check back with your surgeon when you return. The asthma issue could be just the humidity. I also experienced asthma issues with my GERD, but that disappeared for me post-surgery, and keep in mind that everyone's recovery is different.

Thanks Sharon. I am trying to figure out if it gets worse after I eat or drink. Hopefully not.

The PA acted as if I was all better when I had my 3 week post-op so I was getting nervous that something went wrong. I’ll give it a little more time

It took me roughly 6 months until I really started feeling better, and at one year I felt like my "new" self. Everyone's recovery is different, but sometimes surgeons don't give you enough information about what to expect and how long your recovery will actually take, and their follow-up care is lacking.

Wow, this is a long healing process. Everyone is different, you’re right... but it’s such a comfort knowing that others have the same problems and learning from you and everyone.

I completely agree about the doctors. I don’t think they understand what we go through. She really acted like I was all better and I was so surprised at her attitude of “go ahead and eat what you want”. This forum is such a help!!!

If you are in Hawaii right now, you might want to check to see if the nearby island (or your island's) volcanic eruption is increasing breathing problems...there is a lot of really bad stuff in the released gases and water vapors.
