I rolled the dice and opted for Nissen for my severe LPR. I’m day 4 post op.
My symptoms began as excessive phlegm and tight throat which was attributed to allergies. It went away with Flonase last year but then this past March became horrific with tight throat, Globus, throat/mouth/tongue burn and inflamed eustatian tube.
I had the nasoscope with an ENT, multiple consults with two different ENTs, and endoscope and esophogram with a surgeon. Esophogram showed significant reflux on video. I’ve consulted with 2 surgeons, both suggested there was no need for the ph test because based on what we’ve tested so far, we can already see without a reasonable doubt what’s going on.
Had the surgery on 7/14 with both of the reputable and experienced surgeons who I had been working with to this point (I did my research on them). The surgery was labeled “beautiful and textbook perfect”. The two days in the hospital my symptoms were next to nothing. Get home and they’ve all come flaring back. Burning throat and inflamed eustatian tube.
I did speak to the surgeons nurse who consulted with the surgeon himself explaining to him my exact pre-op symptoms have now resurfaced and they’re suggesting the inflammation is my body’s response yet to the surgery and that the throat burn is likely irritation from being intubated....I disagree completely.
I realize doing this surgery was a roll of the dice. Diet and meds did not work and I’ve also read how if meds don’t work for LPR patients then likely surgery won’t help. I quizzed my surgeon on this and he said not only are they VERY selective on who they offer this surgery to but that surgery is typically reserved for those who don’t respond to PPIs and it’s that subset where they have data showing success. Similarly, the other surgeon also said PPIs will reduce the acid but do nothing for reflux—only surgery would amend the degree of reflux I have. He also stated I’d likely have residual LPR pain for 2-3 mos after surgery
This all said, I’d love some realistic feedback from LPR folks who’ve had this surgery and if after time they’ve found relief. I’ve lurked her for a while now and am hoping to generate some positive feedback.
