drug hypersensitivity, drug allergies

went to doctor who ordered a z pack (zithromycin) for sinus problem. my pharmacist changed to Sandoz for this product. I have been sick, sick, sick and quite exhausted from it.

now have terrible gas pains and belching which i have never had before. gas pains are horrible and i wish i had not bothered about the sinus infection. maybe it would have done away by itself. doctors don't care. it is a horrible mess.

my doctor in New York city told me about the windows on otc drugs. here they are very ignorant and could care less. just read the package directions type thing.

what is this crummy world coming to?

gas pains are even worse. much prefer the old headache type of thing. the window means that you can take more of a otc drug than it says on the package. spoke with nurse in gastroenterologist office and have to take probiotics now. it should calm down in a week or two. am absolutely exhausted from the gas pains.

I'm allergic to alot of antibiotics (anlaphyaic and rashes). So I understand your misery.

Sinus infection can make you ill for a year if it's not treated adequately. It often takes a second round of medication to knock it out. I'd call the doc if the infection didn't go away. He may have to chanage the med.

If you got a rash from sulfa, tell the doc. It may mean you shouldn't take it again.

i'll live with the sinus problem. was so much in knots from gas on sunday morning that i puked up acid. what has helped is oat meal because it slows down the gastric output. am very tired. thank you chartreux.

alie i told the doc and now can't take sulfur drugs...there is nothing else i can take or want to take. am sick of doctors and am sick of everything. sinus headache is nothing compared to BAD DRUG REACTION, do you get what I am saying.

Augmentin and several other drugs are often prescribed for sinus infections. I complain until they give me something that works on the particular bug.

If you get too many sinus infections it can mean there's an allergy that needs to be treated - by an allergist, or it's possible that sinus surgery is needed.

My list gets longer as I find out the hard way which drugs cause me severe allergic reactions: All Mycins; Penicillun; Lidocaine; sulfites.


Be very careful, they are adding lidocaine to many of the aloe vera gels. This should not be put on an open sore or bite. I wouldn't use it on my face or scalp either.

I ended up coming down with an Autoimmune Disease called Dermatomyositis. They are also adding preservatives and other harsh chemicals for whatever the reason.

well...i am reading a book about pharma and all they care about is money. yes the web can be helpful but the best idea is to go without drugs if possible. calling a good pharmacist is also an excellent idea.

gas and belching is improving and just hope to take my pain pill soon. this will help me to walk.

let's try to relax about the mess...but it is very scarey. being allergic takes a lot of courage because most people don't even understand it and have no sympathy so it is good to get on the boards.

Hi everybody - some people are allergic to certain drugs .. I'm allergic to colourants, especially tartrazine and its cousins who unfortunatey are referred to as "permitted colourants", so am often caught off-guard like recently. Bought efferfescent Vit C tablets, no mention of colourant on the container .. so when my eyes started swelling and I started itching I knew that I took in a "bad" colourant - checked the small pamphlet - "this product contains a colourant that could cause allergies" - contacted the company and asked which colourant they used, "Sunset'Yellow - E110" - checked the adverse effects out - the list is longer than that of tartrazine!

Most drug allergies cause minor skin rashes and hives. Serum sickness is a delayed type of drug allergy that occurs a week or more after exposure to a medication or vaccine.

Penicillin and related antibiotics are the most common cause of drug allergies. Other common allergy-causing drugs include:

* Sulfa drugs
* Anticonvulsants
* Insulin preparations (particularly animal sources of insulin)
* Iodinated (containing iodine) x-ray contrast dyes (these can cause allergy-like anaphylactoid reactions)

Most side effects of drugs are not due to an allergic reaction. For example, aspirin can cause nonallergic hives or trigger asthma. Some drug reactions are considered "idiosyncratic." This means the reaction is an unusual effect of the medication, not due to a predictable chemical effect of the drug. Many people confuse an uncomfortable, but not serious, side effect of a medicine (such as nausea) with a true drug allergy, which can be life threatening.
