So I've been dealing with what I thought was chronic allergies for years. Constantly stuffed up, very congested, post-nasal drip, etc etc. I've been on constant anti-histamines for years, with which I've had varying success. The allergies are year-round and I also frequently get colds. My nasal passages are apparently super, super swollen. I had a CT scan of my head to check for polyps and sinus inflammation, which was normal. I recently also reacted to a vaccine. I got a flu and pneomonia shot and, below where I got the shots, my arm got VERY red and swollen. I ended up at urgent care on prednisone and antibiotics. I showed both doctors a picture of that reaction and I had to email it to them. They're going to give me a patch to wear with different ingredients in the vaccines to see if I react.
I also developed a chronic cough early last fall. At first, allergy medicine helped, but then nothing helped. After a great deal of testing I got two inhalers (flovent and albuterol) which both seemed to help. The chronic cough basically went away. I also take Singulair now, and I have a nasal spray. I've had a spirometry twice, which was normal.
Today I finally went to an allergist for testing. I've been under the impression that I have severe allergies which have caused these problems. They did a spirometry again (normal) and did a full allergy test for some molds, dust, a couple animals, and then all pollens. It was ALL normal. I did notice some very small marks next to some of the dots, but the doctor said they were small enough to be considered negative. They were shocked. They also did intravenous testing where they injected me with the testing, which was also normal.
So I'm at a loss. I have always been very reactive when exposed to pollens. I react to dust and react very strongly to grass that is being cut. If not allergies, what could be causing my problems? I'm also supposed to go to a pulmonologist, but the allergist also deals with asthma and she said that's unnecessary.
Could anything else cause these symptoms? I'm supposed to start reflux medication to see if that helps with the chronic throat clearing, and she showed me how to use the nasal spray correctly. I kind of want a second opinion but overall I'm really at a loss. Could the tests really be wrong? Any tips on where to go from here?
