Asthma under control?

I first was diagnosed with asthma in college and it was called exercise induced. I am now in my forties and I find that I am using my inhaler four times a day. Once when I get up in the morning, if I exercise, and if I do housework or any type of strenuous activity. This includes walking at a fast pace. There are days that I do not have to use my inhaler, but they are few and far between. I currently treat the onset of my attacks with a ventolin HFA 90 mcg per actuation rescue inhaler and it is the same type I have used since college. It does not contain a spacer, and it does get it under control. My question is? Do I have my asthma under control? I have to keep my inhaler with me at all times, because if it gets difficult to breath and on a few occasions when I am unable to locate my inhaler right away, I get to the point that I cannot breath at all until I use the inhaler. (Extremely scary). Just not sure what my next steps should be. I am from a non-smoking home and grew up in one as well; however, my Mom was a beautician and I was around a lot of cigarette smoke when I went to work with her, which was often as a child. I am allergic to dust mites, pet dander. I have a lot of sinus issues and did have sinus surgery when I was 26, which did help my breathing a bit. Tonsils removed at 30. Not sure if any of these impact my asthma symptoms. Thank You for your advice.

It's pretty widely used, and it helps ascertain whether or not a person's asthma is under control. It might be a helpful tool for you. I agree with achievinggrace, there are a lot of medications out there that can be prescribed to help manage asthma, from long acting beta agonists (similar to ventolin, but longer acting), to inhaled corticosteroids, to antihistamines, to anticholinergics (which help dry things up).

I'm not a doctor, but it seems to me that using your rescue inhaler that frequently might mean that your asthma isn't well controlled. I know my doctor would adjust my meds if I were using my albuterol that frequently. But we are all different, and your doctor should be able to help you figure out what's best for you.
