Sudden allergic reactions, mast cell activation?

Hi! My daughter who is 13 who’s never had allergies... just her tongue got irritated when eating pineapples. The last few weeks she’s been getting itchy rehashes almost daily and we can’t pinpoint anything specific she could be reacting to. I believe she might have had Bartonella a few years ago after getting lice as she had hugely swollen glands for a whole year, plus fatigue and anxiety. This past year had been extremely stressful with going through bullying and losing all her friends. Now I’m wondering if these things might have set off Mast cell activation with her almost daily, totally random reactions.

Anyone have any experience with this? What are your thoughts?

Thanks for your reply! I have Lyme and Bartonella myself and these don’t seem to be Bartonella rashes. Sometimes she gets hives, sometimes little itchy bumps and other times it almost looks like bug bites but they are not. I know tickborn infections can set off Mast cell activation as well as stress. She also had a really bad flu in the fall. They really seem like an allergic reaction and goes away after taking allergy meds. She also has fatigue and stomach aches which are also symptoms of Mast cell activation. I’ve started giving her probiotics to help with her gut and immune system and it seems like her reactions started calming down some.
I have another child who has always had many allergies and eczema and just thought it was strange that my child who wasn’t allergic to stuff suddenly started getting allergic reactions almost daily.

Sorry to hear about your unusual rashes. It’s very easy to miss tick bites. Mosquitos and biting flies also carry diseases. It’s crazy how many infections they can carry. You can get bitten and get an infection and not get symptoms till years later. The Lyme community here is great if you ever feel you want to ask a question. Hopefully what’s going on with you has nothing to do with any infections.

I had Bartonella and developed mast cell activation. There seems to be more info on it on the Lyme boards. It sounds like it could be a possibility for your daughter. Hope she feels better soon and is able to find a way to deal with the bullies.
