Primary care docs freak out when I am sick

It can be really frustrating Joan, but don't give up. Hopefully you can find someone who will do the proper testing so you know the best course of action. Guessing "it's this or that" doesn't seem like it's very useful. Have you requested a referral? Perhaps doing your own research and finding a specialist with positive reviews and rankings might be better than a referral.

My allergist/asthma doctor freaks out when I am sick and she sees people with asthma all the time. My entire GP practice gets a bit up tight too. My allergist has explained to me that her primary concern is that a simple infection will turn into something serious very quickly and because of my other health issues the time between when I first get sick. It is because I am more likely to need antibiotics than a normal person. So instead of waiting two weeks I am only supposed to wait one week. More mucus means I am more likely to have a bacterial infection.

Honestly in my case she is right though. A few years ago I went from feeling find to pneumonia in 3 days. Another time I had a cough for a week and suddenly got boils. I've walked around with purulent sinusitis thinking it was just allergies for weeks because I didn't feel much worse than I normally do. While you might not be the same person as me I think that there is an assumption by doctors that every asthma or allergy patient they se may see could end up being 'that person'. 'That person' who is going to be bullheaded about being sick or is unable to tell the difference between their normal illness and something worse then drop over dead or end up in the ER.
