Lorazepam vs xanax

 Hello again healingwell friends. Just to let you know i started paxil about 4 weeks ago since the celexa was not meeting what i wanted it to do.

 I am on 20 mg/day paxil and about to change to 30 after a month of taking. I had a question though, somehow my doctor messed up with perscribing my lorazepam. last time i went in she said she'll perscribe me 1 0.5 mg to take every 2 days....so 15 of them to last 30 days, which is fine but when i picked it up i only had 7 in there. so my mom is getting her perscribtion today which includes .5 tabs of xanax. i was wondering if it was fine to take a xanax or 2 until my appt on thursday with my doctor "since i have to go out and do some family things for the next few days"

My doctor actually did perscribe me xanax before but i told her the ativan was fine...but im wondering if i should take the xanax just to last me until my appt. i did check out the differences in doses between the 2, so i will cut the .5 in half of xanax to have it work the same as a .5 ativan

P.s my mom does not really take the xanax she just has it to keep for emergencies

Hi Ty,

I am sorry about your Rx mix-up...this must frustrating. However, we can't ever recommend that you take anyone else's medication, or to guess what dose/half dose would be the same in a different drug. (even if it is in the same 'class')

This is just too risky without getting your doctor's approval. I do hope that you can get ahold of her, or her assistant to get the help that you need.

I agree with SC it is best to follow what the doctor has prescribed as there could be interactions with your other medication. I would give your doctor a call and say that you have not been prescribed the amount you thought and see what they suggest.

If you run out of your prescription, usually if you go to the pharmacy where you filled the script and let them know you're out of your medication and cannot get a prescription yet, they may give you a couple of tablets to get by until you talk to your doctor.

Don't take other prescriptions, plus you are not familiar with Xanax. It is not a benzo you take and I would not recommend taking it. It is extremely addictive and awful with a short half-life.
