Losing my patience with my daughter

My 5 YO daughter is in kindergarten. Her teacher told me in Oct that she's not improving and everything is getting worse and she might be held back. In kindergarten?! Seriously? We have been getting her extra help that is costing us $700 a month in tutoring. I see some improvements but she had trouble focusing. She has so much energy and doesn't stop. I have no patience. I tried helping her with her homework right now and she's not even trying. I know she knows the stuff she's just doing other things instead. I just had to walk away because I couldn't deal with it. I just don't know what to do.

If she knows the stuff, maybe she's bored with it and isn't being challenged? My second grade teacher did nothing to help me grow. She held me down. I was gifted.

Is it possible she isn't a product of traditional learning? Some are visual learners. Some learn by doing.

ADD? ADHD?

Just throwing some stuff out there.

I understand your frustration...I went through the same thing with my oldest daughter. I knew she was smart...but her school marks never reflected her intelligence.

When we did have her tested...the administrator told us that she scored in the highly gifted range (IQ was 140 something) I burst into tears of joy...mixed with confusion and frustration!

She had a rough time of it both in public, private...and yes, even homeschool for a short stint.

She does deal with mild ADHD as well as what we believe to be bi polar 2.

I encourage you to keep open communication with your daughter's teacher... take advantage of your school's resources, and possibly her privately assessed if necessary.

I know how difficult this is to deal with...but as Smooth mentioned. ..this is likely beyond what your daughter can control or change through will alone. There is probably an underlying issue that needs to be addressed.

Once you figure that out, and get her helped...there will be no stopping her;)

Yep, ^^ditto^^ on the above.

I think in this day and age, things are a bit twisted with our educational system, but hey, that's me and my personal opinion.

I think it's *easier* for people to want to heap on frustrations and problems when sometimes what's being overlooked is quite the opposite. Exactly like S.C. said. Sometimes when kids are smarter than their peers they get bored and need *more* not less stimulation.

I know that doesn't take away the frustration, but I hope hearing it from at least a couple of us that....been there done that....it may help ease at least some of it?

Thanks everyone, I think she might just be bored. I'm going to try to get her into some activity. Maybe gymnastics. Hopefully she can burn off some of that crazy energy!

JF- My son is the same way and he did kindergarten twice because he was just not mentally ready for first. I have no trouble leaving him to figure it out on his own if he wants to play around. I get busy with something else and before I know it he is asking me for help and will finish without fuss. My son still has trouble but he was better off for staying behind a year. I would say to do as the school recommends and let her stay back, she will end up ahead of the game for it. It is also better now then later. I know it is hard but you can do this you will just have to deep breathe more often. That is the best advice I have for you and I truly hope that this helps.

Hi JF

I think that is an excellent idea getting her involved in gymnastics as it will give something else to focus on and as you say use up all the extra energy she has which may result in her being able to focus more at school.
