Autogenic training has been a Godsend for me, you can either find a trained therapist to train you, or do what I did and buy a book and teach yourself. I started off with progressive muscle relaxation tapes but autogenic is something you can do yourself anywhere. It teaches you to create feelings of warmth and heaviness in parts of your body and is deeply relaxing.
It's not only good for anxiety it is also great for chronic pain if you happen to suffer from it. Best part is that it has no side effects because its just a relaxation technique.
I went through a really stressful time in my life a couple of years ago and was so anxious I couldn't sleep at all.I took strong sleeping pills to get about
4 hours a night, and was still stressed. Then I discovered autogenics and the importance of relaxation, and using this over a few months I was able to ween myself off the sleeping pills and sleep through for 8 hours a night. It literally saved my life to be honest I was almost at the end of my tether with anxiety.
Another thing I find helpful is playing games, just simple ones like cards on my tablet. Even if it doesn't distract me completely, it usually calms me down enough to start thinking clearly.
