Service dog update!

A while back I was approved for a service dog for my PTSD. I was hesitant to go ahead with it because it's pricey and I didn't know if I should use my own dog that I already had or buy one from the service dog training facility.

about a month ago I took my dog, Aldo (a mini Aussie/boxer mix), down to the trainers and just had a look around, talked with them, asked questions and introduced them to Aldo.

Between my husband and I, we thought it was a good idea to proceed. The trainer told us that Aldo was the perfect candidate for a service dog and since I love him dearly, we choose to have him trained.

It's been a process. Lots of time and patience and, yes, money. It's going wonderfully. I've seen so much growth in my dog and can already see him becoming my guardian. It makes me feel so much better. Going on walks or to the store have been nightmares for me, especially going places with lots of people. I've been unable to go out with my friends because of this, but now I feel more confident with Aldo with me.

Our relationship has changed. We're no longer master and pet, but work colleagues more or less. He has a job to do, which is to keep me from a breakdown and help me out of potentially triggering situations. He's still working on knowing them, but he's done wonderful so far.

I can't wait to see what my newfound freedom with him provides. I'm excited to finally be able to return to society.

Just thought I'd give you all an update since some asked back when I made the original post. I'm happy I went through with it. And even if you only qualify for a therapy dog instead of a service dog, I highly recommend it. It's been liberating!
