Hi, Tim,
Yes, it's pretty darn frustrating not to be able to take something for anxiety or pain without the intense nausea. The only 2 things we've found over the years that seem okay (minor headache, but no nausea) are Valium and Halcion (I had that before an epidural in the cervical spine--still hurt, but I didn't really care, lol). My best friend is like you--so many things affect her badly (the poor girl went bonkers on a narcotic after major abdominal surgery), so she has to be even more careful than me. I'm glad your eye surgery went well--being able to see is a good thing!
The reason I know how patients at the endoscopy center are sort of 'left in the hallways' is I drove another friend there for her colonoscopy. She did just fine, but she's a nurse and actually prefers to get Versed and Propofol. I'm glad it's there for her, but it was alarming to see how many folks were doped and laid out on stretchers in the halls, some naked and moaning, etc. I think it's not that anyone means to be disrespectful, it's just that it's a busy place, and things get backed up, no pun intended. I saw all this when they let me in to help my friend dress and leave.
The new place (still waiting on the appointment) has larger cubicles and allows a family member to be with you beforehand. Patients are not left outside the cubicles. The doctor/nurse I spoke with (they were relaying messages to me) wants to start with Zofran for nausea right away--very proactive. A CRNA will be in the room to assess my breathing, etc. and will have either Valium or Propofol if I ask for it (and nothing if I don't). I think that is a reasonable approach. They did seem surprised Propofol makes me sick--it's usually anti-emetic--but there we have my weird system again. The nurse I called also said that anything abdominal has a greater chance of causing nausea--makes sense--regardless.
Hope you and all here have a nice holiday,
Dee
