Sertraline and Ischemic colitis?

I've been on Sertraline for about 4 months now.

Went to the ER Friday after painful cramping and rectal bleeding all day long.

GI doc thinks it's ischemic colitis and mentioned that Sertaline can cause colitis issues.

Was wondering if anyone else had went through the same thing.

I'm not wanting to get off of Sertaline as its working for my anxiety but I'm concerned if it's colitis related.

I am sorry to hear of this concern.:(

Have you dealt with colitis/gastro issues previously?

This could be something that you are simply predisposed to...and perhaps an alternative Rx might be considered?

...what did your doctor recommend?

My best friends mom had it and yes it was from
The Zoloft. Not everyone gets it but she did. She is now off of it and takes Xanax for her anxiety now

Hi Scaredy Cat,

I have IBS but I had never gushed blood out rectally all day and night and felt pain like I did last Friday. The doctor set me up with a colonoscopy next month to determine. Thank you for your response.

Hi Pretty Kittay,
I liked how the Sertaline is working but now I'm wondering if I'll need to try something else as I need to be on an anti depressant as benzos usually lose their strength and I have to keep going up in dosage. Thank you for your response.

Oh my goodness...I so sorry to hear you went through this scary and painful experience!

Do you have a psychiatrist that you can consult with? They would have the best knowledge of what psychotropic would meet your needs, and not aggravate this issue further.

I hope you find the solution you need!

Yes I see one every few months to do a check up. I'm going to mention this and see if I'll need to switch.

Yes, I was on generic Zoloft for 3 weeks then started bleeding, was then diagnosed with UC. I always suspected it was the Zoloft.

I have been on sertraline for about 5 - 7 years somewhere (it's been too long for me to say for sure). I have had no intestinal issues.
