Hey there,
I've had pretty bad anxiety my whole life and was diagnosed just recently with panic disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. I'm currently only taking Xanax. I can go weeks without a panic attack and then (for example this week), I can begin to have them every day, often multiple times.
I am relatively familiar with panic attacks and their symptoms but lately a new symptom has flown to the forefront: shortness of breath. I know this is very common but for me, breathing has never been an issue. Now when I panic, I feel like I can't take a deep breath and I'm not getting enough oxygen or am being choked or suffocated and constantly checking my face and fingernails for any signs of blueness (that last one is a bit absurd, I know). It's pretty terrifying. I've already been to urgent care and the doctor in the last two days and my oxygen level is at 100% and my lungs sound totally clear (still waiting on lung x-ray results) and I was even given an inhaler. I'm convinced I have something else going on (health anxiety!) and can't seem to attribute the shortness of breath to anxiety alone--which I also understand is a symptom of health anxiety. What a vicious cycle!
I am curious what folks do to help with shortness of breath, how you ease the terror, or even practices that have truly worked and helped with this scary panic symptom. Any thoughts appreciated
