Need advice on best antidepressant to take

I've had anxiety on and off all during my life but am going through a particularly bad bout of it recently. I take Xanax which has always seemed to help somewhat but never been on an antidepressant because I've heard about so many side effects. I'm seeing my therapist next week and I've decided its time to try one (he's been trying to get me to take one for years). For those of you who have taken one or more, do you think one is better than another....with less side effects etc? I'm the very shakey, jittery type with racing thoughts etc so don't want anything that's going to make that worse. Any suggestions....I trust this forum as its always been a life saver for me during the real rough times like right now. Thanks, kind folks.

All medications have side effects, even the Xanax you are currently taking.

Each of us reacts differently to medications. Some will not experience side effects, others experience minimal side effects and some experience more side effects.

The best antidepressant? The one that ultimately helps :-)

My mom.takes Effexor, and had no side effects to speak of...


..but as Snoopy said, everyone is unique and reacts differently.

Hopefully between your research and your therapist's. Recommendation you will get a great match soon!

From what I've read on here and other websites, my first choice would be lexapro. Seems like the majority of people taking SSRI's are split between lex and Zoloft. When I was going though a terrible anxious bout, I researched for a month and decided if I had to try one it would be lexapro. But it really is a shot in the dark. Hoping for the best for you Andwes.
