Hi, my name is Rich.

The bathroom door in our house is sticking. I live with my sister. She is insisting we fix the door ourselves. I am not very mechanical and hate working on anything like this. It's hard to argue with her. I don't pay much rent here and when we disagree I am always afraid she is going to ask me to leave (even though I know I do contribute to the running of the house, for instance when she goes on trips, I take care of the dog, etc). I am very anxious that we won't be able to fix the door. My sister gets angry at the drop of a hat and so the whole thing about fixing the door makes me nuts and just worries me to death.

Would appreciate any feedback.

I am sorry that you are feeling anxious about this current situation...home repairs are very stressful IMO as well. My hubs and I disagree on things too. He wants to try and fix them himself...I want to call in a professional, lol!

Does your sister own the house, or do you rent? If you are renting, I agree with you that this is a situation for the landlord to take care of. Normal maintenance of the house and fixing aging/wear and tear issues should be part of your rental agreement.

If she owns the house...then of course, you have the two choices of DIY, or calling someone in.

How about this? Try watching some youtube tutorials to see what is involved. It may be WAY easier than you think. You can also determine if you even have the tools needed for the job. Buying necessary tools may run you as much as calling a handy man in, so do your reseach with some bids first.

You can then present 'your case' to your sister and together make the smartest decision together.

I hope you can come to the most comfortable decision for you my friend!

Hi Scaredy,

Thanks for your good common sense. I talked with my sister and she says we will tackle it tomorrow or she may do it herself. She owns the home. We have lots of tools left here by her ex-husband.

I was really in a downward spiral when I wrote, just feeling so trapped. That has passed as I have reached out to friends and people in recovery.

I am so glad you are feeling better now! Well done for reaching out. Sometimes all it takes to reset our mood is talking it through, and getting some support.
