Helping those with mental illness can be rewarding. Making a difference in the lives of those trying to cope with this terrible illness not only helps them, it can also help you. Just knowing that you helped someone can be rather rewarding.
However, helping others doesn't have to be rocket science.
Granted, becoming a psychiatrist isn't easy. It's not a simple job. Being a psychiatrist and prescribing medication isn't a menial job by any means.
But helping those with bipolar disorder, PTSD, depression, etc. doesn't necessarily require rocket science. Heck, just being a good listener when someone with mental illness is telling you about their problems isn't rocket science. However, it really can help people.
Also, it doesn't have to rocket science in order for you to find it to be interesting and fascinating too. I've talked to those dealing with mental illness before. And while doing that wasn't brain surgery, I still found it to be both rewarding and interesting.
